The short and the long of what we have gathered on the Post Covid story of the oldest block in the town.

It’s business as usual for the young politician who recently refused Blacksburg Town Council’s request to step down due to recent election fraud allegations. Watson is full-steam ahead, beginning his conversation with publisher Hart Fowler by wanting to publicly apologize to Draper Block business owners that have had to grin-and-bear the late-running Draper Block Improvements. The featured letter was written and signed by local merchants on the affected area of Draper Road.

The Town’s Improvement’s work is delayed but has the potential to be the a part of the masterful Art-Trifecta in the center of Town.

The short and the long of what we have gathered on the Post Covid story of the oldest block in the town.

The Roanoke Times covered the story this way in a Sunday Cover Story in Print:

Here’s our coverage from January:

The Town closing the 200 Block of Draper to traffic during the quarantine is one of the few positive takeaways from the pandemic. Market Square Park was once a parking lot, and now is a cornerstone of downtown culture. Encouraging these forms of outdoor gathering by removing pavement, adding shade and lights, is well timed with a boom of downtown growth.

Interim improvements will begin in May. and will include better defined dining areas, a defined walkway for pedestrians and bicycles, and more seating with shade. Also planned is a small stage for impromptu performances.

Ed Note:
I wrote this section in 2024 after communicating with Town of Blacksburg regarding specifics of the plan.
These plans are now delayed due to sewer system updates.
